episode 25 - How to get pregnant with irregular cycles with Ellen Louise Naturopath

Welcome to part 2 of my fertility series! 👋🤰

Last episode we spoke about why you might not be getting pregnant, and this week we are looking at how to get pregnant with an irregular cycle.🩸

So many clients have come to me for fertility help and I've noticed these specific points happen with nearly every single couple. It could be that they've never had hormone testing done or that they have never had ovulation tracking done - aside from LH strip testing which I do not recommend as it is inaccurate - but that is for another episode.

In this episode we discuss:

🤰 the important role of hormone testing with ovulation and conception.

⚖️ why hormone testing is important for ruling out and also investigating conditions such as PCOS, thyroid imbalance, high androgens, and anovulatory cycles (menstrual cycles with no ovulation).

🩸 understanding the right day of your menstrual cycle to test hormones and why.

👩‍⚕️ why it's important to have a practitioner who can read and interpret hormone testing correctly.

🗓️ ovulation tracking importance.

💧 why I recommend the Tempdrop device for basal body temp tracking.

🥑 fertility nutrient testing for optimal ranges.

👶 why nutrient status is essential for conception, pregnancy and post partum.

episode 24 - Fertility series: Why am I not falling pregnant with Ellen Louise Naturopath

Welcome to part 1 of my new fertility series! 👋🤰

Over the next few months, I will be releasing my fertility series on the podcast. This will be a space to have a conversation on a variety of topics to do with fertility.

First up, we have 'why am I not falling pregnant?' - a common one that gets typed into Google. Next up, are you trying to fall pregnant but it's not happening? Have you only been given IVF or IUI as an option? A lot of my clients on their fertility journey have been told that there is nothing they can do and that IVF is the only option.

This is all said before knowing about ovulation and fertile window tracking. It's wild that most people don't know that you are only fertile for 5 - 6 days per month. This is quite a small window for conception to happen, and it is totally different from person to person! There is no one size fits all approach to fertility. Did you know 50% of fertility problems are due to sperm count, sperm motility or sperm morphology? Most of the time you will only be sent for a sperm analysis after 1 year of unsuccessfully trying to conceive but why not get it looked at right from the get go?

There are many reasons why sperm health is declining and we discuss why that is and why testing is important in this episode. We also get told that fertility issues have a lot to do with genetics but rarely are genetics tested! We discuss the main standout gene that affects fertility, the why it affects fertility and what we can do about it. MTHFR gene is a wormhole of information and I recommend getting help from an informed practitioner, they can interpret the results and suggest treatments for your fertility journey.

Keep listening to this series if you're interested in:

🏋️‍♀️ taking action before taking the IVF path

🪜 knowing the steps to take to get the correct testing

Episode 22 – Holistic Sleep Strategies with Georgina from the Holistic Sleep Project

In this week's episode we have the knowledgeable Georgina from The Holistic Sleep Project! 💤🤩 Georgina is a Holistic Sleep Consultant, Qualified Naturopath and Mother. Her interest in sleep was born out of her own sleep issues and the tragedy of her own mother dying when she was just 13 weeks pregnant with her son. In order to preserve her own wellbeing and mental health in the 4th trimester, Georgina actively prioritised her baby’s sleep and it paid off! He has been a dynamite sleeper ever since! Her baby was essentially her first client! 👼🏻

From there Georgina studied an International Holistic Sleep Qualification while her son was taking his day nap and together with her Naturopathy background created her own uniquely holistic and gradual method to help babies and toddlers get more sleep which in turn completely transforms the family dynamic and positively alters the experience new parents have as their babies are completely well rested and so are they as parents.

She has her own podcast “The Holistic Baby and Toddler Podcast”, consults with families on a 1:1 basis, has a membership “The Sleep Collective” and recently has become a Finalist in 4 International business and Health/Wellbeing Award Categories in the Women Changing the World Awards announced in London during May 2024.

In this week's episode we dive deep into the following amazing topics:

  • Preferred environment for sleeping baby like a pitch black room, white noise on a timer, etc.

  • Is there a place for feeding to sleep?

  • Soothing sounds like white noise, shushing, lullabies, anything preferable?

Episode 21 – Thyroid Part 2 - Delve Deep Into Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroid Disease With Melissa Briggs

In this episode we have the amazing Mel Briggs back for a PART 2 of our thyroid series. In this epsiode we are delving deep into Hashimoto's disease!

Did you know that 80% of hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto's autoimmune disease.

So many people with Hashimoto's go undiagnosed and therefore the root cause is never addressed and they end up consistently struggling and having to increase doses of medications.

In this episode we will cover:

  • What is Hashimoto's

  • Subclinical versus overt Hashimoto's

  • Why medication - Thyroxine is not enough

  • Why Thyroxine is an inactive storage hormone - still needs converting and it doesn’t really address the autoimmune component of the disease.

  • Nodule/goitre/thyroid cancer risk - Do I need an ultrasound?

  • Risk of further autoimmune diseases.

  • How COVID affects autoimmune disease.

  • Link with EBV and Hashimoto's

  • Stress and Hashimoto's

  • Implications in fertility

  • Environmental toxins and Hashimotos - living on a farm, painters, pesticides, mould exposure, fake tanning, mercury fillings, exposure to chlorine and flouride etc.

Episode 19 – Do I Have Imbalanced Hormones with Naturopath Ellen

Do you suspect you have a hormonal imbalance? Have you been told that you just need to go on contraception to fix everything?

Hormone imbalance is not a one size fits all, there can be MANY varying different symptom pictures for each individual.

Some common signs of hormonal imbalance that can be fixed and are not normal or something you have to just "put up with" can include mood swings, period pain, acne, sugar cravings, fatigue, migraines & headaches, heavy periods, clots in period blood, painful or swollen breasts, spotting throughout the cycle, sleep issues, hair loss, excess hair growth, dry skin, sluggish digestion - plus many more.

There are many different factors that can imbalance your hormones including endocrine disruptors, stress, contraceptives, gut and liver issues just to name a few.

Testing for hormone imbalances is essential and this is something covered in this episode.

EPISODE 18 – Functional Pathology, Hormone testing and Gut Microbiome Testing with Naturopath Ellen

How many times have you heard “Your blood tests came back all normal” and you’re sitting there in front of your healthcare practitioner with your eyes hanging out of your head and about to cry if you hear that line once more?

Honestly, the amount of times I have heard that from patients is absolutely uncountable! Blood pathology is such an exciting part of your health journey and can uncover so much more than what you may think. Blood pathology optimal ranges are based on the people who get the blood tests done. Usually “healthy people” don’t get sent to do blood tests all too often. Blood test optimal ranges are based on an average of the people who get the blood tests done. Therefore, the optimal ranges I want my patients to be in are often different to the “standard” on the lab form. Blood pathology can mean so much more than just what google says. I have spent many years studying how to interpret blood pathology better and more in depth. Even a simple iron test can tell us a lot about how your immune system, adrenals and hormones are functioning.

Check out episode 15 here all about iron deficiency and why it's not just about how much red meat you eat or what iron supps you take.

Free optimal ranges pathology guide available for download here so you can cross check your bloods.

Episode 15 – Iron Deficiency - The Real Reason You're Struggling To Build Your Levels Up with Rebecca Edwards from Activated Probiotics

In this week’s episode, we speak with Rebecca Edwards, Director of Education at Activated Probiotics all about iron deficiency, Why aren’t we absorbing iron & what to do about it - especially in women. This episode is quite technical language heavy but trust me - it will all make sense in the end! Low iron is something that Doctors, Naturopaths and Nutritionists see A LOT of in clinic - would even say approx 80% of my clients present as iron deficient when starting initial treatment with me. And often, despite having taken high doses of iron supplements or even iron infusions in the past they find their levels simply do not budge. It can be so frustrating to many which is why I want to unpack the misconceptions around iron absorption in this episode. In this episode, we discuss:

  • Reasons why we may not be absorbing our iron - Eating too little? Supplement not strong enough? Taking too much?

  • What actually blocks our iron - you may have heard of coffee & other tannins but what else!!

  • Learn how our gut health is VITAL part of the puzzle to your iron levels

  • Why taking iron everyday may be stopping you from building up your iron stores

  • How other supplements like zinc and calcium levels affect your iron absorption

Rebecca is a speaker, writer, educator, and qualified Naturopath. She has over twenty years experience in education and has lectured in Australia, the UK, and the US, and delivered naturopathic education to healthcare practitioners all around the world. Rebecca is also the Director of Education at Activated Probiotics, where she is finding and sourcing the latest research.

Check out the podcasts I’ve guested on

The Holistic Baby and Toddler Sleep Podcast | EPISODE 27 - “Common fertility struggles and holistic solutions with Ellen Louise Naturopath”.

Ellen is a qualified Naturopath, living on the Sunshine Coast in QLD and running an online clinic offering personalised support to women with hormonal issues and couples wanting to fall pregnant through 1 on 1 consultations and comprehensive online courses.

Ellen's holistic approach to fertility has facilitated numerous success stories worldwide, helping couples who have faced multiple miscarriages, unexplained infertility diagnoses, age-related fertility concerns, and those seeking alternatives before going down the IVF route.

With a special interest in women’s hormonal conditions and fertility, she investigates thoroughly through comprehensive testing, employs the fertility awareness method, herbal medicine, nutrient therapies, and nervous system regulation to help couples overcome various challenges.

Ellen and I had the most informative and honest chat about her work around fertility in what she calls the “middle bit”, the area between trying for a baby without success and heading to the mind field that is IVF. There are SO many areas within the male and female physiology that can be addressed Naturopathically for improvement to sperm and egg quality which can then lead to successful conception. We talk about the difference between the medical mainstream fertility testing vs the vast array of integrative testing Naturopaths can do for a couple who is trying to conceive and the elements of our health that may be contributing to this issue.

We also talked about the notion of not just getting pregnant but how important it is to conceive a healthy baby, hold it to term and have a positive birth experience.

This is a very informative conversation and at times emotional as we talk about the difficulty of getting pregnant and how difficult it can be for some couples.

After listening to this podcast episode, you will have a new insight to your fertility and feel empowered to understand how much you can do to support yourself and your partner to conceive without necessarily going down the path of IVF (or to support the process of IVF).

*TRIGGER WARNING

We discussed baby loss, miscarriage, medical termination and other topics such as secondary infertility and unexplained infertility.
